Guyana and India share friendly and strong historical relations which dates to more than 186 years. Guyana and India established diplomatic relations on May 26, 1966, and since then both nations have maintained strong and vibrant relations premised on the historical, cultural, and economic ties. The strong and dynamic ties of friendship shared by the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of India have matured and blossomed over the years and has resulted in mutual benefits to two peoples and countries.
Interactions between Guyana and India are structured through various mechanisms at the bilateral and multilateral level. On the bilateral front the two nations enjoy a very vibrant cooperation programme in the economic, scientific, technical, and cultural fields, whereas on the multilateral front India and Guyana share commonalities and interest in several areas namely new and renewable energy, climate change, climate financing among others.
In recent times, the Official visit of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to India and other High-Level visits have given the Guyana India bilateral relationship a new impetus through increased cooperation, political dialogue and collaboration in areas of mutual benefit to both nations.
