Prime Minister of Guyana Strengthens Global Partnerships at WSDS 2025 and Bilateral Engagements in India
New Delhi, India – March 8, 2025 – Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, concluded a successful four-day official visit to India from March 4 to March 7, 2025, marked by high-level engagements and a standout appearance at the 24th World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025. Hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi under the theme “Advancing Global Partnerships for a Resilient and Sustainable Future,” the summit served as the centerpiece of the Prime Minister’s trip, where he delivered a keynote address and accepted a prestigious award on behalf of Guyana’s Vice President.
During the WSDS on March 6, 2025, Prime Minister Phillips called for enhanced global cooperation to address climate change and accelerate sustainable development. Highlighting Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, he showcased the nation’s leadership in climate finance and renewable energy, including a 173% increase in solar capacity since 2020 and the upcoming Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic programme (GUYSOL). He emphasized the need for equity in climate solutions, urging support for developing nations and praising the India-Guyana partnership in renewable energy and technology transfer. The summit also saw him accept an award on behalf of Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, recognizing Guyana’s contributions to sustainable development.
Beyond the WSDS, Prime Minister Phillips engaged in a series of bilateral meetings to deepen ties between Guyana and India. On March 5, he met with India’s Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Honourable Pralhad Joshi, to discuss collaboration in wind, solar, and hydropower. The leaders explored renewing an expired Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on renewable energy and advancing a solar power initiative for a Guyanese government building, with potential expansion across the Caribbean. Accompanied by Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, HE Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj, and Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs. Ronalda Edwards-Horatio, the Prime Minister underscored India’s role as a vital development partner.
The Prime Minister also visited Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals on March 6, engaging with healthcare experts to strengthen cooperation in this critical sector. Discussions focused on advancing healthcare development in Guyana, building on the longstanding India-Guyana partnership. Additionally, he met with Mr. Sanjai Kumar, Chair and Managing Director of RailTel Corporation, to explore collaboration in digital transformation, including e-governance, telemedicine, and smart infrastructure—areas aligned with Guyana’s ongoing projects. A RailTel delegation is expected to visit Georgetown soon to further these talks.
Throughout the visit, Prime Minister Phillips reinforced Guyana’s commitment to sustainable growth and global partnerships. His engagements highlighted renewable energy, healthcare, and digital innovation as key pillars of cooperation with India, while his WSDS address positioned Guyana as a model for balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship. The trip, which concluded on March 7, 2025, sets the stage for expanded collaboration, with both nations poised to advance shared goals in sustainability and development.
